Keys to success in digital transformation

The technology landscape is evolving fast. It is an era of digital transformation. The race is on – Companies that are not transforming at a quick pace risk becoming obsolete. It is similar to the theory of evolution, but at gigabits per second in today’s digital age. Data Analytics and digital transformation are successfully helping various organizations in unlocking the doors to countless opportunities. Most organizations are rolling out exceptional analytics solutions leading to smarter business moves, proactive operations, profitable outcomes and satisfied client base.

The question is no longer whether you need to embark on digital transformation – but how? The answer is not obvious and there are a range of technologies – AI, ML, Deep Learning, Text analytics, RPA, Digital Marketing, NLP and the list goes on.

Without going into detail of each technology, In this article, I would like to like to share some thoughts to consider in your transformation journey

1. Keep strategy before technology

It is important to keep what you want to achieve in focus and in the center of the initiatives. Often, in pursuing latest technologies, executives risk strategy being driven by available technologies rather than the other way around. While future proofing your business is important, the rate at which new technologies are evolving, a new technology may not give you an edge for long. Keeping your long-term strategy in focus is useful to achieve real results. The strategy and technology often goes hand in hand and this is where transformation experts can work with you to define the future landscape for your organization.

2. Decide success measures and start tracking early

Once the initiatives for digital transformation are chosen based on your strategy. It is important to keep track of the projects and to ensure that benefits are constantly being measured. Good project management and business management practices are indispensable in achieving good results from transformation.

3. Convince and involve key stakeholders

The effectiveness of any solution is dependent of quality of solution and acceptance of the solution in equal parts. It is important to get key stakeholder on board and supporting the initiatives. There is a natural resistance to change and fear of the unknown that needs to be addressed by talking about the benefits and how it will help people in their areas and make life easier for them. Transformation initiatives almost always involve changes in processes and the way people work unless they are marketing focused only.

4. Implement in steps where possible

The digital transformation journey can be broken down into distinct smaller projects. Even larger projects would have milestones and sub projects that can be tracked independently. Not having experience in new technologies does not mean that independent projects cannot be tracked well. It is important for small steps to meet the success criteria and timelines for the overall effort to stay on track and maintain pace.

5. Get help from transformation consultants

Digital transformation consultants work as independent contractors for a company. They focus to increase the company's short-term performance and their long-term strategic objectives. Their skill set is much in demand and hiring a team of digital transformation experts is a lot more expensive as well as difficult to maintain. There is higher accountability and wider experience with an independent digital transformation firm. It is their core business and not yours, so they spend on staying current and relevant to customers.
